History

Trinidad Correctional Facility is a state-run prison located in Las Animas County, Colorado. The facility was opened in 2010 and has a capacity of 500 inmates.

Before the current facility was built, there was an earlier prison complex in the same location. It was first used as a temporary prison depot in 1854 to lodge convicts who were laboring on cutting a channel for the passage of small boats. However, it was not until 1876 that construction of a huge stone-walled prison complex began and was completed in 1880, initially housing approximately forty inmates.

The earlier prison complex had a long and storied history, including a number of notable inmates. One of the most famous was Alfred Packer, who was convicted of cannibalism after leading a group of prospectors on a disastrous expedition into the San Juan Mountains. Packer was sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to 40 years in prison.

In 1899, a fire broke out in the prison, killing thirteen inmates and one guard. The fire destroyed much of the prison, and a new facility was built in its place. This facility remained in use until the current Trinidad Correctional Facility was built.

Today, Trinidad Correctional Facility is a modern, state-of-the-art prison that provides a range of programs and services to inmates. These include educational and vocational programs, substance abuse treatment, and mental health services. The facility is staffed by a dedicated team of professionals who are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of both inmates and staff.
